Energy forecasts predict that natural gas will be the fastest growing primary energy source in Europe in the next two to three decades. In view of this, leading energy experts will discuss the future of gas in the European energy system. To grasp the complexity of natural gas as a potential (transition) fuel, this session will firstly contextualise the European future gas outlook before addressing questions such as:
- What will be the role of natural gas in a future energy system? Is it a transition fuel, or is gas likely to stay?
- For which applications do we require natural gas?
- Where will natural gas come from and how will it arrive in Europe? Which role will LNG and Nord stream pipelines play?
- What are wider system implications of gas staying as part of the energy mix? How will electricity and gas interact?
- What is the potential of decarbonisation looking at hydrogen, biogas and CCUS?
